Resellers like OpenIO
Yesterday we had our first OpenIO Crash Course in Ferrara, Italy. It was hosted at the headquarters of ICOS (our Italian distributor), and 15 people attended.
The partnership with ICOS started only a couple of months ago, and we held a first event at the end of May to present OpenIO to a group of partners. I was impressed at that time and I’m still impressed today.
This time it was a technical meeting, with pre-sales and field engineers. We went through the architecture of the product, initial cluster configuration, and basic operations to manage the cluster. It wasn’t a proper training session; it was more a course to evangelize the product and let them know what it is and how it works… and it worked! 😉
The feedback was great, especially from those who had tried other object storage solutions in the past. The characteristics of OpenIO SDS make it easy to begin and deploy a 3-node cluster, so that proposing PoCs to customers is much easier than with the competition. Add to that the fact that we can run with very limited resources and on heterogeneous nodes, and it’s golden!
There are a growing number of sales opportunities and resellers are happy to be able to propose something new that can be easily managed (which is not common in the object storage space).
It’s the right time for object storage
It’s not just OpenIO, but it really is the right time to move to object storage (even if you don’t need a multi-PB infrastructure).
The number of S3-compatible applications is growing fast, as is the storage capacity needed by any sort of organization. These two factors are at the base of the renewed interest in object storage in general. But, from what I see, the ease of use, the flexibility, the open source philosophy, and the potential of Grid for Apps are what spark the interest in our solution. (Along with our licensing model … but let’s put it in the flexibility bucket.)
Things work only when all the parties involved get what they want. In this case, end users clearly appreciate our technology and overall TCO, while partners can highlight the fact that it is much easier doing business because OpenIO SDS is easier to sell, has fewer limitations, and helps them to build a professional services offer around it.
And our advantage? It’s really easy to build a partner ecosystem, especially among those who already tried object storage and didn’t find it as easy and cost effective as they wanted.
I can’t wait to repeat this experience in other countries!
